James Mason delivers a masterly performance as Johnny, leader of a clandestine band of Irish freedom fighters. He's hiding in the house of his sweetheart, Kathleen Ryan, while planning a hold-up for cash needed to continue his private war. Things turn sour during the robbery forcing a wounded and bleeding Johnny to stagger home through the wintry streets of Belfast with the police in hot pursuit. What follows is a Christ-like struggle for survival, rich in imagery and bursting with emotion, in what is one of the masterpieces of British cinema.
